The UVA Food Collaborative works to promote research, teaching, and community engagement in pursuit of more sustainable and place-based food systems. The Collaborative includes UVA faculty, staff and students and Charlottesville community members and provides a focal point for university and community efforts to study and improve local food systems.
The Food Collaborative’s work falls along various points of the agricultural and food lifecycle – from soil health, land use and production to distribution, marketing, consumption and disposal, to policy, health, education and more. To examine the interrelated ecological integrity of the foodshed, the group includes academics in the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, health sciences, architecture and humanities; dining services personnel and campus sustainability managers; and undergraduate student leaders, graduate students and graduate fellows from various units on Grounds.Throughout the semester, the Food Collaborative hosts a Graduate Student Seminar Series, 2-3 film screenings each semester, forums on local food systems, and promotes interdisciplinary educational programming. The Food Collaborative is always looking for more students and faculty to get involved, and hopes to be a resource for research, teaching, and community engagement for the UVA and Charlottesville community.
