Outdoors Club

The Outdoors Club website is www.outdoorsatuva.org. There you’ll be able to take a look at the extensive list of past adventures that members have lead and attended. Their trips represent a diversity of interests, including hiking, white water rafting, caving, volunteering, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, slacklining, backpacking, sky diving, skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking. The skill levels of trips range from beginner to advanced, so regardless of whether you are trying to learn a new sport, or seeking the thrill of adventure, there’s something for you! If you don’t have Spring Break plans yet, Outdoors Club should offer several great opportunities across the US. Past adventures over Spring Break have included canoeing in Florida and skiing in Vermont!

If you ski or snowboard, you may be pleased to hear that Outdoors Club has negotiated a great deal on season passes at Snowshoe Ski Resort in West Virginia. This year they are offering Outdoors Club members passes for $199; since passes have a market price of $500, this is a great deal! Ski just three times and get your money’s worth. There are trips every weekend and some week days. You can go ski or snowboard with the club for less than it costs to stay in Charlottesville for the weekend!

Members carpool to all of the trips. When you join adventures, trip leaders will usually ask if you have a car and how many people it will seat. The club reimburses everyone for gas, and gives 30% of the gas price to drivers to cover wear and tear. So, if you drive for a trip, it will be definitely be worth your time, and if you don’t have a car or don’t want to drive, you’ll always have a way to get outside! The club also reimburses food and lodging up to an extent, making our low membership prices an even better deal. We also have a gear room, filled with backpacks, sleeping bags, climbing shoes, fly fishing rods, mountain bikes, tents, and a huge variety of other types of gear available to you for free, once you become a member.

If you’re sold, the cost of joining is $30 for 5 months and $40 for the year.  You can fill out and download the liability form at http://outdoorsatuva.org/members/join. After you print and sign it, can turn it in to the Newcomb mailbox #400444 in an envelope along with your membership fee (You can just hand it to the people in the Newcomb mail room). During the sign-up process, you will be given the option to receive announcements for trips via email.

If you have any questions, email outdoors-officers@virginia.edu. Members as well as officers would tell you that being a part of Outdoors Club has been one of the most rewarding experiences of their college careers.
