In the Fall of 2010, a group of student activists at the University
of Virginia joined the nationwide Sierra Student Coalition’s Beyond
Coal Campaign to phase out campus use of coal power. UVa has always
been a hub of innovation, and therefore we as students believe that by
retiring the campus-based coal plant the university will be investing
in developing and modeling a vision for a clean energy future. So far,
we have collected over 1300 student petition signatures and are
looking forward to discussions with administration about developing a
plan to end our reliance on coal-fired power. President Sullivan needs
to know that students are behind this movement, and are calling on the
university to dump coal where it belongs – in the past
